Eric seems to think that the story of Rebecca shows that children should choose their own spouses, or, as he puts it “give their daughters the freedom to decide whom to marry” because of verse 58, where Rebecca says, “I will go”. In the context of the entire story, however, this is extremely odd. Let’s review the story:
1) Abraham decides Isaac needs a wife.
2) He sends the servant down to get the wife.
3) He will not allow Isaac to take a wife from nearby (as Esau later did)
4) He will not allow Isaac to go down and get the wife
5) The servant asks Rebecca’s father and brother to give her to Isaac as a wife.
6) They do so, saying, “The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the LORD hath spoken.
7) The next morning the servant insists on leaving immediately
8) The mother and brother object, insisting that she should stay a few more days.
9) They decide to ask Rebecca
10) She says “I will go”.
11) Isaac sleeps with her and loves her.
Now this story, as written, is so radical that even ardent Biblicists insist that something must have been left out. That they must have asked Rebecca before they pledged her. Or that her father must have meant ‘if she is willing’ when he said 'take her and go'. And that Isaac must have ‘consented’ at some point in the process.
But how Eric can even imagine that Isaac chose Rebecca, or Rebecca chose Isaac is beyond me.
